Canfield Fair Fire Department
« on: August 31, 2002, 08:44:24 PM »
Some of you may not know about a unique little fire department that is only in operation one week out of the year. The Canfield Fair Fire Department operates three "stations" throughout the fairgrounds during the week that the fair is taking place. Each station is nothing more than a tent and a truck with firefighters in lawn chairs. Members and apparatus of the department come from various departments in Mahoning County. Today, for instance, Austintown FD had a reserve rig with 5 members, Canfield FD had thier mini-pumper and some members, Green Twp. had a pumper and members, and one other department also had a truck. These departments operate on a 24-hour rotation. I am unsure if this is a volunteer department, or if thier is compensation through thier department of the Canfield Fair. I welcome anyone else to share thier knowledge on this department.

I've never been to Canfield, but I do recall that during the late 1960's and early 70's there was a FD at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus.  Does anyone else remember this?  Sure would like to see a photo!

Also, the State Exposition Center is listed as having bought a fire engine from Sutphen in the early 70's.  I checked about 10 years ago and nobody at the fairgrounds was familiar with the rig.  Any photos of this rig floating around?

In case we have any Poland buffs out there, tomorrow, Labor Day, Poland Engine 93 and some members will be one of the departments at the fair.

Is the old American LaFrance still at the fair? I think it was a 1928 Metropolitan.

Ya know, I forgot about that rig. I remember it from when the FD was at thier old location. Now they have a new "headquarters" and I am not sure what became of it. Interesting. It's something I'll try to look into while I am out there today.

Well, Poland Engine 91, Milton Twp Engine 31, and... crap, I always forget that last one, were at the fair today as well as Chief John O'Neill of the YFD. He was just enjoying the fair, not on official business.

Yeah, thanks Struthersboy, it was Springfield Station 3 that was represented. They had Engine 3, Squad/Medic 3, and a brush unit, I believe. Milton also had a brush unit.

For Springfield, they had truck 26, the pumper, truck 27, the brush truck, and truck 29, which is sort of a first responder truck.

Another fine year for the Canfield Fair. Check out the apparatus photos that several of us took this year!

In addition, every night of the fair, Canfield Firefighters are staffed inside the main Canfield Fair Fire Headquarters. They respond to the emergencies that occur at night. Also, one of the areas that gets forgotten is inspections. Canfield Fire is responsible for inspecting EVERY concession trailer on the grounds. This is possible because of a team effort between the Canfield Inspectors and inspectors from around the county.
