Joliet, Illinois

Hi,

My good friend Jack Connors had the opportunity to photograph the Joliet F.D. in September of this year.  I was fortunate enough to receive a set of the prints of J.F.D. apparatus.  These photos show all of the first line engines and trucks along with some of the spare apparatus and various other support vehicles.

Joliet is a rapidly growing area situated approximately 35 miles southwest of the Chicago Loop.  The city had been in a state of decline in the 1970's and 80's which was reversed to a great deal in the 1990's with the state of Illinois allowing casino gambling (2 casinos currently operate in Joliet).  Add to this the ever increasing population spread generated by the city of Chicago and you have the right combination for growth.  Joliet is now one of fastest growing cities in the United States.  The population in 1990 was approximately 77,000.  In 2005 a special census showed a population of 146,000 in just over 50 square miles.  Staffing of 212 maintains the services of 8 engines, 2 trucks, 1 quint, 1 heavy rescue, 9 ambulances, and 2 Battalion Chiefs per shift.  Station 2 no longer is active but is used to house the Fire Investigators and some unstaffed special equipment.

I'm going to begin by posting some of the special units and spare apparatus.  Yes, you will have to keep checking back as these photos will be posted in installments!!
