Student Loses Life in Car Crash
Story from the WYTV Channel 33 Web Site on 10/13/2006.
A horrific car accident has claimed the life of a 17-year-old high school student from Youngstown, and leaves his older brother is in intensive care.
Eva Mastromatteo has more on this tragic story.
As students file out of Rayen High School Thursday, many of them learn about the death of a fellow classmate, junior Edward Serrano. Retia Crawford says, "It's hard to believe he's just gone that easy. He don't mess with nobody. He ain't deserve to be gone like that." Serrano was killed after the car he was in smashed into a pole and burst into flames Wednesday night on Poland Avenue in Youngstown.
Serrano's 25-year-old brother Johnny was driving.
Police say speed may have been a factor in the accident.
Meantime, students at Rayen have good things to say about Edward.
Brianna Triplett says, "He was like really quiet. He went to Choffin. He was a good student."
Edward attended Choffin in the morning and Rayen in the afternoon.
Rayen principal Henrietta Williams says, "He came here this year. He was previously at Wilson. He also attended Life Skills and then he came to us in September, like the second or third week in September."
There's no school on Friday.
Counseling and a moment of silence in Edward's name will take place at the school on Monday.
In Youngstown, Eva Mastromatteo, 33 News.

Crash kills teen, injures brother
Story from the Youngstown Vindicator on 10/13/2006.
YOUNGSTOWN — Edward Serrano, 17, of Guss Avenue, a junior at The Rayen School, was killed in a fiery one-car crash on Poland Avenue on Wednesday evening, said Detective Sgt. Patricia Garcar, an accident investigator.
The victim's brother, Johnny Serrano, 25, also of Guss Avenue, was driving, Garcar said. He is in stable condition in St. Elizabeth Health Center. Garcar said that Johnny Serrano lost control of the vehicle around 9:08 p.m. and struck a pole in the 1200 block of Poland Avenue near Youngstown Tool & Die Co. The car then burst into flames.
Garcar asked that if anyone witnessed the accident, call her at (330) 742-8777. She thinks a black sport-utility vehicle may have passed by the accident scene.
When asked if he had been drinking, Serrano told police that he'd had three shots. He'd earlier told an ambulance paramedic that he'd had a couple of shots and three beers, according to police reports.
Garcar said it is unknown yet whether alcohol was involved, but speed was a factor. She said in her interview with Johnny Serrano that he appeared to be disoriented, saying first his dad was in the car, and then his girlfriend.

Most car accidents have to claim lives. We know for the fact that an accident may cause a vital effect in our lives, and so we'd better take good care of ourselves. Because of the tragic that had happened to those victims of the car accident, students may be banned from driving.
