Boardman, OH Fire Department
« on: December 06, 2005, 01:51:40 AM »
Here is a nice shot of Engine 74.

From the Boardman Fire Department Web Site (http://www.boardmantwp.com/fire)

Engine 74 (704) is a 2004 Sutphen "Quint"

This fire rescue vehicle serves as both a ladder truck and a pumping engine.  It has five major components; an aerial ladder, a pump, a water tank, hose, and ground ladders. Engine 74 offers us the flexibility of having an aerial ladder available immediately if needed for rescue or ventilation operations in addition to operating as a pumping engine.  Engine 74 also has all of the necessary auto extrication equipment to remove a trapped occupant of an auto accident.  It also equipped with a heart defibrillator and responds to emergency medical incidents. This engine responds from Station 74 on all calls as either a first or second line apparatus, depending on the type of call or which side of town the call is on. Cost new: $469,995.00

I can't believe that no one has posted these. I don't know much about the
( world famous ?) Sutphen turbines, maybe someone will fill us in. In Larry
Shapiro's book "Aerial Fire Trucks" he relates: " In 1972 Sutphen installed a
gas turbine engine that offered 500 hp with 1800 pounds of tourque in an
aerial tower. The unit was sold to Boardman,Ohio, but the engine was pulled
after delivery when Ford, the engine's producer, decided that the engines
would not go into production because fuel  economy was only 4 miles to the
gallon. Other aerials that were in production at the time had the turbines
replaced with 12-cylinder diesel engines. Note the front of the Sutphen engine
                          is lettered " Turbine Pumper".
