Youngstown's 2010 Plan
« on: June 03, 2003, 11:32:46 AM »
Any of you familiar with the details of the Youngstown 2010 plan may have heard that part of it includes abandoning certain areas of the city and removing city services, such as sewers, electricity, gas and (don't quote me) but also police and fire. This would primarily be on the East Side, in areas where people do not live. There are many areas on the East Side that have streets but no houses. The plan as far as I know is to remove the roads and let the overgrowth take over. Has anyone heard any more specifics on this or what impact it will have on the safety forces?

I honestly belive that this is a great idea. There are many cities that have done this and it has worked successfully. If the area was to be rebuilt, either commercially or residentially, then the services would be restored. It allows the city to save funds that would otherwise be spent on non-existant neighborhoods and if the areas are rebuilt, then hopefully sufficient tax base would be created to restore them. The financial gains definetly outweigh the loss of a few roads.

That is a great idea.  I feel that Warren should do same!  How many areas in our region have abandon houses and businesses.  Warren is finally demolishing these buildings, and hopefully new commerce and residents will decide to build.  If Youngstown can close down stations that arent needed, then manning can be upped at the open stations and $$$ can be saved to help implement advanced services.

Once again, I hate to bag on the private ambulance service, but they are the reasons the fire department fails.    Youngstown should start running a BLS engine soon anyway, and hopefully by 2010 be running paramedic ambulances and engines!  :D

As much as some people hate to have to deal with EMS, the valley has to face facts and realize that if fire departments are to succeed, then they have to start making the transfer to running EMS also.  Everyone lays off, but only Youngstown and Warren seem to lay off guys by the handfulls, instead of 1 or 2 or 3.

Just because you have a paramedic card, doesn't mean you know how to fight fire.  It takes more than rubber gloves.

ur fd is responsible for safety of its properties and residents with due equality everywhere within their jurisdictions. any fire load is a danger be it structural non-structural ,wooded ,brush , open fields or what have u. anything that can combust is a potential danger to both life and property.
the only way an area can be abandoned is like what fdny has done. when a given sector is entirely consumed and every structure leveled and prairie grass is now growing where once there were buildings then and only then can a fire unit be eliminated or re-deployed elsewhere.

Interesting concept. I kinda like it though. We run ALS engines and rescues here in Columbus. We also send ladder trucks as first responders if needed.  Medic work does make up most of the calls, and the engines do run their asses off at times. But whatever works for the city.
I kind of agree with the BLS engine concept. Granted YFD will take a lot more calls, but EMS is the wave of the future, it seems.  Will be interesting to see what happens.
