hello to everyone out there. struthersboy here with a quick question. why does Poland FD own a ladder truck?? i have never gotten this equation here because Poland doesn't have any tall building that require a 100' aerial. maybe i'm wrong. Boardman has a ladder which is in close distance, and if need be Y-town's is out there too, just a bit more distance. someone let me know on this one----peace, struthersboy

I do know that they used it on mutual aid in Beaver Township about a week ago. I don't think Beaver needed to call another one, Beaver Township has one to, but they did.

cfde4,
i didn't know campbell had an 85' ladder. 19 years of living near you guys and i still now jack lol. anywho, i have always wondered why Poland has one. Guess they had money and didn't know what to do with it. but in a sense its good they have it because of what is in Downtown Struthers/Campbell. and i know Struhters won't buy a ladder truck--we don't have the space to store one. oh well guess it will always be a question to ponder---peace, struthersboy

Well guys, time to answer some questions about Poland Ladder 91.
Let's start by stating that Ladder 91 is a 75' Pierce (not 100')... There quite a few pictures on the web site at
http://www.polandfire.org
- Please excuse the dust, we are remodeling the site, but feel free to look around anyway!
A common misconception is that ariel units are for high building fires... Units like Ladder 91 are far more useful and versatile than that! I don't think that I want to get into firefighting tactics in this thread... But I will explain some things about our ladder.
Ladder 91 was not purchased for tall building fires... However, it was purchased because of the need for quick and efficient vertical fire attack on large volume structures and as a 2-5 story quick rescue tool. Remember, Poland is an all-volunteer fire department - We need all the help we can get, and we haven’t lost a basement yet!
Most people don't think there are many large buildings in Poland.. an easy misconception if you are not familiar with the Poland political boundaries! Some people don't even realize that we have an entire area North of Struthers/Lowellville!
Also keep in mind that Boardman Tower 71 is/was not a staffed vehicle and BFD policy does not allow movement of manpower from manned trucks for mutual-aid calls. That means that if Boardman Tower 71 is needed, we would have to wait for BFD to call in its volunteers and then respond. That is the main reason that Poland Ladder 91 is the first-in ariel for Poland, Struthers, Coitsville, Lowellville, New Middletown, parts of Springfield Twp, Mahoning Twp PA. and Pulaski PA. and is the 2nd in ariel unit for Beaver and Boardman!
Oh, and as for YFD having a ladder... There is no mutual-aid agreement between Poland ' Youngstown (as with YFD and many other departments)... That is a political issue that I can not answer!
BTW, Here is another advantage of having an ariel... BFI... You try fighting a trash fire at a dump without an ariel!!! Go ahead, I dare you!! - I won't want to smell you afterward though! There is a lot to be said for being able to extend a 75' ariel over a huge trash fire!!!
Well, I hope I have shed some light on this question... and if you would like to see Poland Ladder 91 in-action, just wait for the next fire in Struthers!!!

The way it has been explained to me is that an aerial is not purchased for the height of the building, but for the ability to reach the top of a structure.
If you have a 3 story building right along the street, it can easily be reached using a 35' ladder. If the bulding sits back from the street, you might need a 75' aerial just to reach the roof.
Many smaller communities have the need for an aerial truck, it's generally the expense that is holding them back from the purchase.

Box2565,
Your comments are very true. However, rescue and access to the top of a structure is only a small part of what an aerial apparatus is designed to do.
Another primary job of an aerial unit is vertical fire attack or attacking a fire from a point above ground level. A vertical fire attack can greatly enhance fire stoppage and control no matter what the structure size... It all depends on the conditions of the fire (location, size, exposure, etc.).

Can someone tell me why Austintowns squads have their numbering messed up? For instance Squad 55 has Engine 3 painted on the door and Squad 17 has Engine 1 i believe on the door while Ladder 2 has Squadd 55 painted on the door. If anyone is looking for an unusual truck. Austintown Ladder 2 is a Freightliner with a 75 foot telesquirt. Thanks

Boardman has not been running their Rescue Squad for quite some time. I asked Chief Dorman and he told me it was because the Rescue has NO HOSE or WATER, so they run the trucks with water and hose just in case they are on a medical call and need to fight a fire. He also told me that the Tower had only like 5000 miles on it and it is almost 15 years old!!!!
