Are you a member or buff of another department in the area besides Youngstown? If so, tell us a little bit about that department. I am starting to work on a web-project creating seperate websites within my Youngstown site for other area departments. It should be up by summer. So please share with us about the stations, trucks, or any stories you may know about that department.

I'm also an Austintown Fire Buff. HAHA! And all of you thought I was just a Youngstown Fire Buff
Actually, my great uncle was fire chief for Austintown for a number of years before retiring in the 80's, my grandfather retired as a captain and my uncle (still on the department) is an Lt. I was in the Austintown Fire Department's explorer post as well but it's no longer in exsistance.
Ok, I'm going to sleep now! zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Hi YFD4!
I have several questions regarding Warren. One of the projects I'm working on right now is a data base of rigs built by Robinson Fire Apparatus of St. Louis. The information that I received is that the WFD had a Robinson pumper delivered in 1912. would you happen to know which companies it was assigned to, the GPM of the pump, and when was the rig disposed of?
Also, currently in the World of Fire report when I see runs in Warren there usually seems to be only an engine and truck responding. How many companies does the WFD operate and from how many stations?
Thanks!
Steve

Regarding the WFD Robinson which was delivered to Mill Creek Park in Youngstown and tested the same day as YFD's Robinson that probably went to No. 2 station on Oak and Fruit Sts the truck was a 700 gpm with I believe what appears to be a double-piston-type dome pump mounted behind the driver and ran as Engine 1 or actually simply No. 1 on the rig which was marked WFD No. 1. I suspect it was elimnated shorltly after or during 1931 when the original chief DK Moser died and was succeeded by Edwin Oldacres.
The present WFD Roster is as follows:
Central Fire Station...111 South St....built 1971
Squad 1....1997 E-One/Hush 1500/750/FF-A,B....vista cab...TMP
Ladder 1...1992 E-One/Hurr 1500/200/95ft A/twr
Rescue 1....1997 E-One/Hush 3-dr Heavy Rescue/Haz-Mat/Command unit w/ vista cab
North End Fire Station...1435 N. Park Av...built 1918
closed permanently 1971
Southwest Fire Station....1275 Palmyra Rd...built 1963
decommissioned 1995...permanently transfered to WPD
East End Fire Station....1600 Youngstown Rd....built 1931...presently a private Ambulance Service
permanently closed 1971
Northeast Fire Station....Atlantic St and Kenilworth Ave...built 1957 but not opened till 1960
Engine 5....1989 Pierce/Arrow 1250/750 2-dr
Northwest Fire Station....2454 Parkman Rd...built 1963
Engine 6....1992 E-One/Cycl 1250/500 T/C Vista cab TMP
Reserve.....1984 Duplex/FMC 1250/750 2-dr
1974 GMC/ALF 100ft MM general duty aerial
1975 Jeep 12gpm Brush unit
Possibly 2 new trucks in the next 3 years including possibly one as a telesqurt.....plans for a new Southeast Fire Station NOT likely

At its zenith Warren City Fire had 6 stations and 96 firefighters plus chief.Currently there are three stations and less than the authorized strength of 84 and actually less than the 75 that were on in 1999. The current plan is to hire sufficient persons to return to 75.The fire load here is not by any means excessive and the city has an ISO rating of 3 even with only the present setup.

Hello yfd4,
A couple more questions. Why is the rig designated Squad 1? Is it a rescue-engine or is the rig equipped with some other compliment of additional tools?
Is Rescue 1 staffed?
Thanks,
Steve

Beginning in Oct 1921 wfd ran a downtown city service truck with 5 men to all alarms citywide of any structural proportions plus a disrict pump. This practice was carried thru till 1962 by which time the rig was upgraded(in 1948 ) to a junior aerial with more than 5 men. In oct 1962 some of these men were assigned to a pumper/tanker which from 1949 was for minor and out-of-city runs where no hydrant service existed. The then chief wanted this additional unit on all structure calls because it had a 600 gal booster for quick knock-downs without hooking up to a hydrant. Because the downtown station was in the center of the city it could easily accesss most areas quickly. A brief experiment in 1966 with a small hi-pressure unit failed and the tanker/pumper was returned to service. In 1969 the service aerial truck which was really a junior aerial was reduced to 1 person only as a driver, the tanker discontinued and a new Detroit-style Squad with a small hi-pressure booster pump put in service with a very large compliment of men. In 1992 this unit was removed from service and replaced with a rescue/pumper running 6 men. In 1997 a newer version of this unit entered service with the E-one Hush which is 38 feet long. It is a rescue/pumper but really only acts as a pumper/manpower squad with enough persons to advance an attack line with a back-up...again arriving in most cases first-due citywide but not always. The heavy rescue/hazmat/command is normally cross-staffed by the squad and ladder personnel except on rare days when there are more than 9 men at the downtown station...actually 12 are needed for an independent rescue crew.
<admin note - a space was added between the 1948 and the ) so the board wouldn't put a smiley in.>

Rumor has it that the Warren Fire Dept is in the process of selecting yet another Interim Chief. According to sources close to the FD the present Interim Chief J. Nutt will no longer be continuing on and likely will NOT be returning to duty as the Assistant Chief either but instead will be entering happy retirement. I repeat....Chief Nutt will be stepping aside...stepping aside....did you copy? copy?(is there an echo around here somewhere?) YFD4

The permanent Chief offficer is on sick leave pending a disability finding and will likely retire when such status is granted thus necessitating an Interim chief at least for the immediate future. YFD4
