Sadly Covington Truck 1 is the only tiller that is in-service in Greater Cincinnati.  When I was much younger (a sensitive subject these days) there were 19 of them in the area.

Why they heck are they getting rid of all of them?  Typically, tillers are used in areas where a standard aerial can't fit because of the tiller's greater maneuverability(sp?).  And on top of that, tillers are supposedly cheaper.  Why would a dept try to get rid of them unless they didn't have the manpower?

Tillers are certainly not cheaper and they are much more difficult to train and operate on. Instead of one driver, you need two. That poses a lot of problems for many smaller departments who have staffing issues.

I believe the cost difference is now $200K more for a tiller as compared to a rear-mount aerial.  As far as I know the price was the reason for the switch to other types of ladder trucks.  Also a couple of places that had them have major staffing issues these days.  Give it a year and I predict there will be a department in the area that buys a new tiller - at least that's what I'm hoping for...

Yeah, the staffing does pose a problem unless everyone is trained to drive.  Which is why I'm for across-the-board training.  But that's a different subject for a different day.
